Firenzé: Common Hair Myths Busted By Our Stylists
We’ve all heard them, the hair “rules” passed down from your mum, your best friend, or that one TikTok creator with amazing hair. But not everything you hear about haircare is true.
At Firenze Hair & Lifestyle Studio, our stylists spend every day helping clients cut through the noise. So, let’s set the record straight on some of the most common myths we hear in the salon (and what you should be doing instead).
Myth 1: Cutting your hair makes it grow faster
The truth: Hair growth happens at the scalp, not the ends.
Trimming your hair doesn’t change how fast it grows, but it does keep it looking thicker, healthier, and stronger. When you don’t cut split ends, they travel up the strand, causing more breakage and making your hair appear to “stop growing.”
Stylist tip: Book a trim every 8–12 weeks to keep your ends sealed and your shape sharp especially after chemical or heat styling.
Myth 2: You should wash your hair every day
The truth: Most hair types don’t need daily washing.
Over-washing can strip away natural oils that keep your scalp balanced and your hair shiny.
If you have fine or oily hair, every other day might work. For thicker, curly, or colour-treated hair, 2–3 times a week is plenty.
Stylist tip: Refresh between washes with a dry shampoo or a light scalp mist. And always use a sulphate-free shampoo especially if you’ve had a smoothing or colouring treatment.
Myth 3: You should brush your hair 100 times a day
The truth: Over-brushing can cause more harm than good.
That old “100 strokes a day” rule is one of the most outdated bits of advice out there. Brushing helps distribute natural oils, yes, but too much can cause friction, breakage, and even frizz.
Stylist tip: Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush, start at the ends, and work your way up gently especially if your hair is wet or curly.
Myth 4: Heat protection isn’t necessary for low settings
The truth: Any heat causes damage without protection.
Even a “quick touch-up” with your straightener or curling wand can weaken the cuticle over time. Heat protection sprays create a barrier to reduce moisture loss and keep your colour vibrant longer.
Stylist tip: Apply a thermal protectant every time you use a dryer, styler, or even hot rollers no matter the temperature setting.
Myth 5: Professional products are just expensive marketing
The truth: The difference is in the ingredients and concentration.
Salon-quality products contain higher-grade ingredients that penetrate deeper and last longer. Supermarket shampoos often have fillers that coat the hair for instant shine but build up over time and dull your colour.
Stylist tip: Think of salon products as skincare for your hair invest in what your hair needs, not just what smells nice.
Myth 6: Curly hair doesn’t need conditioner
The truth: Curly hair needs even more moisture.
Curls tend to be drier because natural oils struggle to travel down the twists of the hair shaft. Skipping conditioner leaves curls dehydrated and frizzy.
Stylist tip: Use a moisturising conditioner or mask regularly, and try “co-washing” (washing with conditioner only) to maintain softness and shape between full washes.
Myth 7: Colouring your hair ruins it permanently
The truth: Damage comes from how it’s done not from colouring itself.
When colouring is done professionally, using the right products and aftercare, your hair can stay strong, shiny, and healthy. The real issue arises when colour is done too frequently, with harsh chemicals or without proper conditioning afterwards.
Stylist tip: Always ask your colourist about bond-repair treatments or a gloss top-up to keep colour-treated hair silky and resilient.
Myth 8: You can repair split ends with products
The truth: Once the hair is split, it needs to be cut off.
No product can “seal” a split end permanently some can make it look smoother for a short time, but trimming is the only fix.
Stylist tip: Invest in regular trims, a silk pillowcase, and a nourishing leave-in treatment to prevent splits from starting.
